At the salmon fishing hut locations tea & coffee is provided however fishing guests must bring their own packed lunches which the hotels will provide for a small charge. Alternatively there will always be a local store near to your hotel where supplies can be purchased. Your hotel will be able to advise you on the location of the local store, local bank, doctor, post office & transport hubs etc. The majority of hotels serve food up to around 9pm each evening so if your arrival time is later please give the hotel advanced notice of this so that a meal can be prepared for you if required.

It may not be possible for non fishers to be present on the actual salmon fishing riverbanks but this is sometimes possible depending on the salmon fishing venue chosen so please check this in advance of making your salmon fishing holiday booking.

Clothing For Your Scottish Holiday

The scenery on the salmon rivers of Scotland is stunning in it's own way regardless of the weather conditions. Good waterproof clothing is required with warm layered inner garments which work well in Scotland throughout the changing seasons. Footwear should be in the form of chest waders for those who are fishing and studded chest wader boots are important and offer a much better grip of the riverbed while wading. Life jackets are mandatory and can be hired or supplied from each salmon fishing location.

If non fishing friends or family are joining you on your salmon fishing trip then the same clothing is advised with good waterproof boots for the various activities listed above. Mosquitos or Scottish 'midges' are not a big problem in the the River Tay valley but can be a problem further north and over in the West coast of Scotland so if you or your group are planning a visit to these other areas then a quality mosquito repellent is worth acquiring.

Sun Protection In Scotland

For those who are fishing for salmon I'd suggest that sunglasses are brought to counteract the sun's glare off the river and as importantly for eye protection while salmon fly fishing. Suncream protection is also very advisable for all salmon fishers especially during the earlier Spring months when the earth's atmosphere is clearer and the sun's rays are much more powerful. As a Scottish salmon fishing guide I turn completely dark brown in the face & hands from February onwards each year while working daily on the salmon rivers of Scotland such is the strength of the sun during the early months and also later in the season.

In Scottish salmon fishing there's a popular myth that salmon don't like to react during sunny weather conditions which I can confirm is not accurate especially on the River Tay when the bright sunlight comes from the downstream direction for most of the year putting the sun in our eyes but not the salmon's eyes as they are always pointed upstream. During the Spring months I've personally found high pressure days to be slightly more productive from a salmon fishing point of view at this time of year on the River Tay.
